This single question captures the core of Verbal Classification in the CogAT Grade 8 Verbal Battery.
At the Grade 8 level, students are expected to demonstrate advanced verbal skills. Verbal Classification questions assess how well a student can recognize shared characteristics among words and identify the option that fits—or does not fitthe group - based on meaning, category, or usage.
In these questions, students are given three words that belong together in a specific way. They must choose a fourth word that matches the same category or relationship. The challenge lies in identifying the exact rule that connects the words, rather than relying on vague similarities.
Verbal Classification tests a student’s ability to:
- Understand precise word meanings
- Identify categories and subcategories
- Eliminate close but incorrect options
- Apply logical reasoning under time pressure
